Tribal Police Chief Sara Rice, Deputy Chief James West and Sergeant Derrick Naumann came to the Percap Patrol event at Grand Market yesterday to thank them, offer support, and encourage them to stay safe in their anti-drug activities. Chief Rice said they were invited by Luther Sam, who said the group wanted to show their appreciation to Tribal Police. Band member Terry Kemper talked about working at White Earth, where officers would sometimes join Band members at the drum, and he asked it the officers would like to join them for a song. Bob Eagle brought out his drum and welcomed the officers and DNR biologist Carl Klimah to the drum. Terry talked about the importance of the drum and the pipe in bringing healing to the community. Chief Rice said, 'Everyone knows I'm the Band member on the Tribal Police force, but I want you to know that all of these guys share the values I have as an Anishinaabe.' After the song, she told the group how much it meant to her to see the officers welcomed. 'These guys are my family,' she said. 'They're my brothers.”

The Mille Lacs Tribal Police Department would like to remind everyone to be safe if you are on the roads this afternoon and this evening. Give yourself extra time to get where you are going if you need to travel in this weather. Winter Weather Advisory Alert: ...POWERFUL STORM TO BRING STRONG WIND AND SOME SNOW THROUGH TONIGHT...INCLUDING THE TWIN CITIES METRO AREA... Snow accumulation from 2 to 4 inches is expected from western into central Minnesota accompanied by winds gusting to 50 MPH late this afternoon and tonight. The combination of falling snow and a very strong northwest wind will create low visibilities with near blizzard conditions across west central Minnesota, where a winter storm warning is in effect from noon until midnight Monday night. To the east, a winter weather advisory is in effect for much of central Minnesota from 3 PM this afternoon until midnight where the combination of 1 to 3 inches of snow and strong northwest wind will cause reduced visibility and areas of blowing snow. The precipitation will fall in the form of rain initially, then change over to snow as temperatures fall Monday afternoon through Monday night as a cold front moves from west to east across the state. Northwest winds will become strong in the wake of the front. If you travel, make sure to let someone know your travel plans and have a charged phone with you. ...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 AM CST TUESDAY... * WHAT...Snow and blowing snow expected. Plan on slippery road conditions. In addition, areas of poor visibility are expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected. * WHERE...Portions of central, east central and southwest Minnesota. * WHEN...Until 4 AM CST Tuesday. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Winds gusting as high as 55 mph will cause areas of blowing and drifting snow. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A Winter Weather Advisory for snow and blowing snow means periods of snow and blowing snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving. The latest road conditions for Minnesota can be found at 511mn.org and for Wisconsin at 511wi.gov, or by calling 5 1 1 in either state.

With Halloween coming up, the Mille Lacs Band Tribal Police wanted to release some safety tips for trick or treaters. 1. Walk on the sidewalks and not in the street unless there is no sidewalk available. If you are walking on the street, make sure you are facing traffic. 2. Look both ways before crossing roadways. 3. Plan the trick or treat route and make sure adults know where children are going. 4. Have a parent or responsible adult accompany small children as they make their way around the neighborhoods. If older children are going out alone, agree on a specific time when they should return home. 5. Make sure trick-or-treaters can be seen. Put reflective tape on their costume, bags, or give them a flashlight to carry. 6. Only visit a home if the porchlight is on. 7. Accept treats at the door, do not go inside. 8. Make sure children know their home phone number and what to do in case of an emergency or they become lost. 9. Use flame-resistant costumes. 10. Use face paint instead of masks so that their eyes aren’t covered. 11. Be careful around animals you are not familiar with. 12. Make sure all candy is checked before consumption. Throw away loose candy and open packages. If you are welcoming trick or treaters to your house, clean off your sidewalks and steps so they don’t trip over anything. Make sure the area is well lit so the trick or treaters know where they are going. As always, notify Law Enforcement immediately if you see any suspicious or unlawful activities.
