Golden Mardi Gras Casino is a part of a trio of Colorado casinos owned by the same company and all within close proximity of one another on Main Street in Black Hawk, Colorado. The other two casinos are the Golden Gates Casino and Poker Parlour and the Golden Gulch Casino.

Golden Mardi Gras Casino is the largest of the three casinos and unique in that it features a New Orleans Cajun and Mardi Gras theme. Plus, it will become the new home of a retail DraftKings Sportsbook in 2020.

Golden Mardi Gras Casino is connected to the Golden Gates Casino and Poker Parlour by an indoor footbridge.

It houses 550 slots across almost 56,000 square feet of gaming space. There is also a full-service restaurant, a grab and go deli and two bars on the property.

The three casinos are currently owned and operated by Rhode Island-based Twin River Worldwide Holdings.

Twin River acquired the casinos from Nevada-based Affinity Gaming in January 2020.

Twin River owns and manages four other casinos across the US; the Arapahoe Park racetrack, Colorado’s only live horse racing facility; and 13 off-track betting facilities in the state.

Golden Mardi Gras Casino opened in 2000. It was sold alongside its two sister casinos to an affiliate of Las Vegas-based Golden Gaming in 2005. Affinity Gaming acquired the properties in 2012.

Just days after it bought the properties in 2020, Twin River announced it had come to separate sports betting market access agreements with US sports betting leaders DraftKings and FanDuel.

Twin River has the rights to three sports gaming licenses in Colorado and plans to retain the third for itself.

DraftKings and FanDuel have obtained online and mobile betting access through Twin River’s licenses. DraftKings is also launching a retail sportsbook at Golden Mardi Gras Casino.

Twin River’s acquisition of the property just closed in January 2020. Golden Mardi Gras’ player loyalty program is in flux as a result.

Twin River says it will offer a free player loyalty program to anyone 21 and older. It will offer free play, cash, gifts, drawing entries and bonus offers across all three Twin River casino properties in Colorado.

DraftKings’ market access partnership with Twin River will see the DraftKings Sportsbook mobile app launch in Colorado and allow Colorado sports fans to place sports bets via a retail betting operation at the Golden Mardi Gras Casino in Black Hawk.

This will make Colorado the fifth state where DraftKings operates a retail location. The others are Iowa, Mississippi, New Jersey and New York.

When Twin River signed the agreement, President and Chief Executive Officer George Papanier said the company is excited about the partnership with DraftKings and the opportunity to launch a retail sportsbook location inside one of its newly acquired casinos.

With the casino closed, the online and mobile sports betting operations launched first on May 1, 2020.

However, Matt Kalish, DraftKings’ co-founder and president of the North American branch, believes certain consumers prefer to bet in cash, go to a physical sportsbook location and hold a ticket for their bets. That traditional model you find in Las Vegas and older sports betting markets is what DraftKings hopes to bring to Colorado through Golden Mardi Gras Casino.

That means once the sportsbook can open, it will, featuring TVs displaying games and betting odds, digital self-serve betting kiosks and ticket windows where gamblers can place bets, comfortable seating and food and beverages.

Golden Mardi Gras online gambling partnerships

DraftKings is clearly Golden Mardi Gras Casino’s online and mobile sports betting partner.

Sports betting is the only form of legal online gambling in the state of Colorado, but Golden Mardi Gras Casino and owner Twin River have some other online gambling partners.

Twin River also owns and operates Dover Downs Hotel & Casino in Delaware. It runs an online casino and online poker site with the Delaware State Lottery that is powered by 888 Holdings software.

Plus, Twin River owns and operates the Twin River Casino Hotel and Tiverton Casino Hotel in Rhode Island. IGT operates sports betting out of these casinos in conjunction with the Rhode Island Lottery and William Hill.

Finally, the DraftKings agreement could be amended to include online casino games in the event online casinos become legal in Colorado. DraftKings Sportsbook hosts online casino games in other states.

Bourbon Street Cafe

The Bourbon Street Cafe is on the third floor of the casino. It offers a menu filled with southern specials. The Double-Up Burger is considered one of the best burgers in Black Hawk.

Creekside Deli

Creekside Deli is on the first floor of the Golden Mardi Gras Casino. It offers a variety of made-to-order grab-and-go options, starting with breakfast until 11 a.m. and continuing with hand-crafted Boar’s Head sandwiches and a full menu including wraps, salads, pizza and dessert.

Jester’s Bar

Jester’s Bar is on the first floor of the Golden Mardi Gras Casino. It features craft beers, premium drinks and a great wine list. The beer selection rotates with the seasons and features specials from Breckenridge Brewery.

Masquerade Bar

Masquerade Bar continues the Mardi Gras theme on the second floor of the casino. There’s a full selection of homemade frozen daiquiris, beer, wine and cocktails. Plus, the frozen margarita, hurricane, rum runner, or passion fruit daiquiri are always recommended.

Golden Mardi Gras Casino history

Concorde Gaming Corp. opened the Golden Mardi Gras Casino in 2000.

However, an affiliate of Las Vegas-based Golden Gaming bought it and sister properties Golden Gates Casino and Poker Parlour and the Golden Gulch Casino in 2005.

In 2012, Golden Gaming sold the three casinos to fellow Las Vegas-based casino operator Affinity Gaming. Finally, in 2019, Affinity Gaming agreed to sell the casinos for $51 million to Rhode Island-based Twin River. The sale closed in January 2020.

The three Black Hawk casinos include more than 30 table games, over 800 slots and a 17-table poker parlor at Golden Gates. There are also three restaurants, two at Golden Mardi Gras, various 24/7 bars and a 700-space parking garage.

Twin River also bought the rights to three sports-betting licenses. Just days after closing on the properties, it announced separate sports betting market access deals with DraftKings and FanDuel. Twin River will keep its third license for itself.
